Troy, AL – Keep Troy Beautiful
Troy’s 1st Annual City-Wide Volunteer Clean-up Campaign – Team Up to Clean Up! engaged local residents to come together for the betterment of our community. The Team Up to Clean Up campaign was held as part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup. Between April 22, 2014 – May 31, 2014, volunteers from Troy neighborhoods, businesses, organizations, groups, and individuals were encouraged to join together to pick up the litter in our community. Garbage bags, recycling bags, and some litter grabbers depending on the size of the group and cleanup area were available for pick up at Troy City Hall, and teams were asked to fill out a survey after their event.
We had seven teams participate this year – Troy Women’s Basketball, First National Bank, Troy Airport ATC, Troy Kappa League, Troy University Football, Global Studies, Bush Memorial for a total of 77+ volunteers and picked up 28+ bags of litter! Areas cleaned included Bicentennial Park, Corman Ave, Park Street, 1st Ave, Botts Ave, Downtown, Barron Road, Prospect Ridge, and Gibbs Street. Weirdest Finds noted by volunteers included a bumper, undies, 45 gun shell casings (4), and used blankets and clothing. Two teams noted how disturbing it was to find the massive amounts of beer and liquor bottles.
What teams enjoyed the most – community service, working as a team with coworkers, fellowship with young and community, having a young girl come up and thank them and gave them a hug, making a difference in the community, talking to the shop owners and how happy they were we were cleaning up. The winner of the $100 TB&T Visa gift card was Bri Lancaster with the Troy Women’s Basketball Team!!!
