Capitalizing on the competitive spirit of March Madness, Purdue University held an internal dorm competition complete with brackets to track residence halls’ progress! They pitted six dorms against one another for week-long mini-competitions, narrowing the field each week depending on recycling rates.
Purdue worked closely with its grounds department to track recycling rates for each residence. It also had the marketing department create the bold and eye-catching bracket graphic. One challenge was mobilizing the manpower to hang up the updated brackets in each residence.
Another key way that Purdue has raised awareness about RecycleMania is to have Eco-Reps visit lectures and give short presentations about RecycleMania. They targeted large, environmentally-focused classes and were able to speak in front of 2,000 students!
